Proper labeling a shipment is necessary to make sure your product gets to your customer. If you do anything less you jeopardize getting your order to your customer. You should do the following:
- The label should be at least 3 inches by 3 inches in size.
- It should be on the front or top of the carton
- The address should match the same address as on the waybill (bill of lading)
- If hand written it should be legible
- The label should be properly affixed to the carton
- The waybill # should be on the label
- Every carton of the order should be labeled, even if it is on a skid and stretch wrapped together.
- If the order is on skids the waybill should read the # of cartons and the # of skids that make up the order, example: 3 skids containing 22 cartons
In this situation there should be 22 labels not 3 labels.
- The label should show how many pieces are in the order on the labels, each carton should be labeled as per this example: 1 of 22, 2 of 22, 3 of 22 etc.
This eliminates confusion if some cartons are taped together and counted as 1 or 2 pieces.
- Fragile items need to have red labels no less than 4 inches by 5 inches in size showing the word “FRAGILE” on the label.
- Items that need to be kept upright require “ARROW” labels that show which direction is up.
- HAZARDOUS goods require the appropriate WHIMS or DANGEROUS GOODS labels.
